How do I change my temporary status to permanent status?
The path from temporary status in Canada to permanent depends on the reasons you're in Canada in the first place:
• If you're in Canada to study, the best way to go from a student visa to a permanent resident visa is to stay in Canada after graduation under a post-graduation work permit and gain work experience that will help you apply for permanent residence under the Canadian Experience Class. Or, in some provinces, you can use your Canadian degree to apply through a Provincial Nominee Program.
• If you're in Canada on a temporary work permit, you can stay long enough for you to qualify under the Canadian Experience Class or you can apply through your province's Provincial Nominee Program, if they offer a skilled worker or semi-skilled worker category.
• If you get married to a Canadian while you're in Canada, you can have your spouse sponsor you under the Canada Class. Or, if you are in common-law relationship for over 1 year, your Canadian partner can sponsor you.
• Depending on your work experience and occupation, you may be able to apply for permanent residence under the Federal Skilled Worker Program or the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
